Post of the Week
Each week, regardless of if we meet in-person of not, we will identify and discuss one post known as Post of the Week (POW). The first date for POW is 9/21. The last is 11/16. You should sign up for POW on the course schedule. If there are any blank spots, I will lead the discussion OR you can sign up and do a double and get more XP.
Post of the Week has two levels:
Level One
Identify and select a post written by a classmate (not you) from any point during the semester that you wish to hear more about. You can have any number of reasons for selecting this post. Maybe you just like it. Maybe it made you think. Maybe you want the author to talk about it more. Doesn't matter. Just identify it.
Level Two
Identify a post from a literacy related blog that was written by someone outside this class. Again, you can have any reason for selecting this post.
Ok - you've got the posts, now what? It depends on if this is a week we meet in person or online....
If We Meet In Person
Be prepared to share the posts and lead a discussion around it lasting 15-20 minutes in length.
If This is an Online WeekMake a video and post it to the class Pi page. In this case, you are not leading a discussion so much as you are starting one. You will want to highlight the two posts you identified in a 3-5 minute video. I will provide the first example for this on 9/14.
When posting videos, note that your video must be posted by 5:00 pm on the day class is scheduled. Videos posted after 5:00 pm on the assigned date will be considered late.
Participation in Online WeeksWhen we meet in class, you will be expected to participate as appropriate in POW discussions. When we have online weeks, you will be expected to do the following:

  • watch the POW video
  • leave a comment in the comments section of the video
  • engage in sustained discussion during the week about the POW video

What does "leave a comment" mean?
  • Leave a comment means you are starting the initial engagement into the discussion.
  • You might be the first person to leave a comment or not, but you should start off by leaving a remark about the video.
  • These comments should be short (no one will read them otherwise) - think two or three sentences per comment.
  • Read what others have written. See if you can add to it or ask them questions. Maybe what has been said doesn't apply to what you want to say, and that's fine. But do check it out

What constitutes engaged and sustained discussion?
  • I cannot quantify this for you 100%. Doing so will serve to stifle the conversation.
  • If you comment one-three times, you are not talking enough.
  • If you show up on one day and leave five comments, you are not appropriately engaged
  • Instead, make it a point to pop in multiple times over the course of the week. See what has been left/said and respond/offer something new. This way, we have continued thought and discussion about the POW throughout the week.

Of course there is more to a discussion than what I have outlined here. We will work to develop discussion norms during the first two weeks of class which can include revising what I have stated above.

Post of the SemesterOn or during the week of November 16th, you will receive a list of all POW's written by our class. They will be presented in the order in which they were identified as POW's. You will be asked to vote for your favorite POW. Based on your votes, we will identify the top five POW's written during the semester. The results will be shared in class on November 23rd, and the posts will be briefly revisited.
