The idea behind Becoming Connected is to get you to start thinking about (or expand your thinking on) how you engage in social media to support your own professional development and contribute to the professional development of others. This quest stems from the text What Connected Educators Do Differently. It is a social quest because it is intended to be highly interactive.
In this quest, you begin with the following tasks:
(a) open a twitter account (unless you already have one)
(b) link to your twitter page (see Twitter Accounts in right hand column)
(c) follow everyone in the class (you can unfollow any or all of us at the end of the semester)
(d) follow my account for MEDX Literacy Cohorts at MEDXLIT. Note that ALL MEDX literacy students have been asked to follow me here.
Next, this quest challenges you to do the following:
(a) each week, follow a minimum of five new people/groups/organizations in the field of education (it's not cheating to follow someone that a student in the class follows - that would be encouraged)
(b) explore the online resources (called Find 5) at the end of each chapter
(c) you will be given a social challenge to complete during our online weeks (9/14, 9/21, 10/5, 10/12, 10/26, 11/2, and 11/16). These challenges will be posted on the class PI page. They will be posted by 5:00 on Friday before the online week officially starts. For example, our first online week is 9/14. Therefore, the challenge will be posted by 5:00 pm on 9/11.
(d) come to our next face-to-face session prepared to discuss your challenge and what you learned from the resources (Find 5)
How will I know that you are following people? All I have to do is click on your twitter handle.
