The Twitter Essay
From this point on, each F2F class will begin with a twitter essay. What is a twitter essay?
You can read all the details here and here.
When you come to class, the rules will be as followed:
1. I will post an opening question or statement for you to respond to.
2. The question will always be posted on twitter.
3. I will always tell you what the question is here (on wikispaces),and I will give you the hashtag(s) I have used and expect you to use. Don't use the hashtags? That's how I check attendance/timeliness. The hashtags are how I find you.
4. Your essay does not need to be exactly 140 characters, but it must be exactly one tweet (no Part 1/Part 2/etc...)
5. Conduct a peer review. Identify at least two tweets from a classmate and respond to them (retweet them if you like but not required).
Make sure you the required hashtags and @ symbols are included in your reply (these will always be provided for you in the directions and could change so always double check)
We will generally spend about five minutes on this in class. I may or may not post the question for the twitter essay in advance of class.
Since this is our first time, I will post it in advance. :) This week's twitter essay question comes directly from your Connected Educators book. It is:
Why do we become connected educators?
Answer the above question (following the five steps listed above it). Use the following hashtag: #twitteressay and any other hashtags you think are relevant.
Assignment Review
We will have time here to discuss anything you wish related to the assignments. A few things to note:

Exploring Digital Tools in Literacy Learning Class Tweeter: (#edtech/#exploreliteracy) Matt (Mister_Murch) Class Tweeter: (#edtech/#exploreliteracy) Anna (ATeach17)
You have done some reading about what it means to engage in literacy learning using digital tools, and you have read some about ways to use a variety of digital tools to support literacy learning. We will now spend a significant amount of time examining this topic.
1. First, we will generate a series of questions you have about digital tools in general and/or how to use digital tools to promote literacy learning. Go here and input up to three of your most pressing questions.
2. Next, we will have a short lecture related to the topic of digital tools in literacy learning.
3. We will now split up into small groups. Your group should identify one-two questions from the spreadsheet that you are interested in exploring. It doesn't matter who wrote the question, and it doesn't matter if more than one group selects the same question.
4. As a class, we will watch the following video:
5. After viewing the video consider, How did the ideas in the video inform or confuse the question your group is exploring? What do you think you can say about your question at this point, and what are you interested in thinking about further? (spend no more than 5 minutes discussing this).
OR (b) Can Digital Media Make Us Smarter? 7. Again, after viewing the video consider, How did the ideas in the video inform or confuse the question your group is exploring? What do you think you can say about your question at this point, and what are you interested in thinking about further? (spend no more than 5 minutes discussing this). 8. We will end by having a whole class discussion. Each group will have a specific amount of time (TBD based on number of groups) to share what question(s) they discussed and to have the rest of the class add to their thoughts. Becoming Connected You have read through Chapter 1 and begun to follow people and explore the resources in your chapter. For this part of class, I want you to share what you have learned from your experiences in starting the Becoming Connected process. 1. Reconfigure your groups.2. Consider the following:
who do you think is worth following?
what have you learned about twitter or tweeting?
what idea/resource did you learn about this week?
what hashtags are worth looking at?
You will have approximately 15 minutes for this discussion.
Explore Project Class Tweeter (#exploreliteracy): Class Tweeter (#exploreliteracy):
You will have 45 minutes in class today to work on your Explore project. You must decide on your project by 9/21. If you do not know what your project is as of today, you can use this time to work through some ideas.
We may decide to start this session by sharing and getting feedback on your ideas for your Explore project. Often, it can help to hear what others are doing or thinking about. If you want to share your thinking on your project, you can. If you do not wish to share your thinking or feel unready to share you do not have to. We may take time to revisit these discussions at the end of the 45 minutes or not depending on how today's session flows.
I will reserve time for us to share/discuss your work both before and after the 45-minute work session starts.
