Who Are We & What Are We Doing Here? We will start with introductions and an overview of what Explorations in Literacy is about and what I hope you will learn from the course. I will also ask you to share one-two things you would like to learn.
Discussion Notes
Ok....if you read what was here earlier guess what? I changed my mind. Discussion notes still exist, I will still take them, and you can still contribute to them if you want. But let's do this on twitter instead. I will be tweeting notes from my MEDXLIT account with the hashtag #exploreliteracy Anytime you want to contribute to the notes tweet it with this hashtag. If you need to set up a twitter account, now is a good time.
The other cohort will be doing the same thing with #contentarealiteracy if you ever want to check in.
Question of the Day: Is Texting Killing Language? Class Tweeter: (#exploreliteracy) Matt Murchison Class Tweeter: (#exploreliteracy) This course allows you to explore what it means to be literate and what counts as literacy. Today, we will discuss the question: Is Texting Killing Language? Do you think that texting hurts students' abilities to write? Do you think it is a worthwhile practice? Does it even matter at all? We will watch the following video on the topic (if you have not seen the video, please do not watch in advance as I'd like to hear your thoughts before seeing it).
The Wiki & Course AssignmentsClass Tweeter: (#edtech) Class Tweeter: (#edtech) I will review the wiki with you and explain how it is intended to be used. We will discuss each assignment in-depth. A few special notes:
(a) blogging: you will create a wordpress account, and we will review how to blog on wordpress (if needed). I suggest you review the assignment directions in advance of the first day of class and begin thinking about what you would like to call your blog. If you already have a blog and want to use it for this assignment, that is fine. Put a link to your blog on our class page.
(b) you will get signed up to be a member of our class PI page if you did not do this yet, (c) you will see that there are assignments due on the first day of class. We will do all of these in class together. You will need to complete this form before leaving.
We will conclude by reviewing what will happen in our second session on 8/31. Class may get out early tonight depending on how quickly we move in setting things up. It will last at least two hours. Note that you should bring a laptop or other suitable device to class. The CCEE has laptops available for you to borrow, but I need a week's notice to ensure one is available for you.
